''It's possible.'' She did write Lillian Gish three or four years ago, saying, ''I kind of wanted to get into the business.'' The reply, typewritten on personal stationery, noted the difficulties of the profession but ''was very encouraging for me.'' ''Gosh, it was neat,'' she added. ''We've always been very close,'' she said.Īnd is the family related to the famous acting sisters who share their last name? ''We're not sure,'' Miss Gish said in a telephone interview from her home. They all got recruited as extras when they gathered for Thanksgiving during the shooting. Sitting in the audience were her brother, Tim, 22, a senior at the University of Iowa, and her sister, Robin Butzier, 25, who teaches gifted students in Albuquerque, N.M., where the family lived formerly. Her father, Bob, a professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa, played a school superintendent, seen on stage applauding after Rose, Miss Gish's character, wins the bee. In fact, the whole Gish family was in that scene. Her mother, who teaches gifted children, appeared in just one other role - as the spelling-bee monitor during a scene in ''Desert Bloom.'' Most of them were of sweet young girls, said the actress, now a high school freshman in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she got all A's last semester while also studying piano, voice and drama. Since then, Miss Gish has played a number of stage roles in children's theater and college productions.
